Great Moments in Being an Ohioan

From a poll in the online edition of today's Columbus Dispatch:

If there were a guarantee that the Dow would be at 13,000 on Monday, Nov. 24, if Ohio State loses to Michigan on Nov. 22, would you make that deal?

Yes: 42%
No: 58%
Please, someone, send in the Delta Force to evacuate my family and me to a less insane place to live. We'll only take what we can carry. We promise.

And no, Ohio isn't insane because people responded to the question in that way. It's insane because the question was asked in the first place.

I'm laughing so hard this message was really hard to type.

As a friend said when I showed him this, "I am glad 58% of ohioans have their priorities straight."

Oh. My. Effin'. Lord. They're talking about...football...right? I mean, I can see it if it were the Indians losing the Series or something, but this is just...yeesh!

They would have to move you to a different country.

Scary as that is Craig - not all of Ohio is blinded by the Buckeyes and in less than one year in Athens I seem to be recovering well from Buckeyemania.

Yeah, it is a little different when you're right in the middle of C-Bus.

I mean, I'm a Buckeye fan, but the extent to which it dominates the discourse here is insane. And it hasn't always been quite like this. There was a basic level of scary fervor about it when I moved here for college in 1991, and it wasn't too much more than that when I came back here from law school in 1998. At some point since then -- I peg it in the late Cooper years -- things really took off to another level.

I would suspect that polls like that in Lexington, Lincoln, Austin, Tuscaloosa or any other college town with rabid fan bases would produce similar results. Scary thing is many of these same folks will vote in elections that really matter to life.

I think the logical next step is to get those 58% to start buying stock like crazy to right the economy!!! Tell 'em that the Buckeyes' success depends on it!

I'd rather OSU beats Michigan than whatever might happen with stocks. OSU and Michigan battles will go on long after the market straightens out. lol lots of Ohioians are born to LOVE OSU!! GO BUCKS
