The Reds and Rays Talk Dunn

Jayson Stark reports that there are some rumblings about an Adam Dunn to the Rays deal. That's great and all, but I'm more amused by the report itself than any putative trade:

The Reds and Rays talked Wednesday night about a deal that would send Adam Dunn to Tampa Bay. According to a source with knowledge of the discussions, those talks haven't yet moved beyond the conversation stage.
If "talks" move beyond the "conversation stage" they cease to be "talks," don't they?

I've been email Dierkes about Dunn, wondering why no one is talking about this beast. He's got 32 HR already, boasts a hefty OBP and yes, K's a ton.

But he's gotta help someone, no?

You have to wonder. I guess there really are that many people still worked up about batting average.

or the amount of truth that came from Ricciardi's comments about his heart and desire

Interesting question: Does it matter if a guy cares about winning when everything he does helps you win? Let's say Adam Dunn doesn't care if his team wins or loses, he just wants a paycheck. But in pursuit of that paycheck, he's helping his team win. The other night they showed that he's hit the most home runs this year of anyone in the league that tied games or put his team ahead. That's pretty "clutch", right? And he's played substantially better in close games (1 or 2 run differential) than in blowouts (4 or more run differential). So let's say he doesn't care about winning (even though that's a very questionable statement). Does it matter?

Supposedly AZ offered Chad Tracy for Dunn. My gut reaction is that I'm happy Cincy seemingly turned it down. I don't know if I could handle another huge K guy in AZ's lineup.

@ Chris Heer:

There really are. Did you see Ozzie's comments about the Griffey trade regarding Swisher and Konerko? I'm paraphrasing, but basically it went, "Why does everyone assume I'll bench Konerko when Swisher has about the same batting average?" Uhhhh, because Swisher's OBP is 35 points higher?

@daniel:

Yeah, I saw that. Swisher's OPS is almost 100 freaking points higher.

Guillen's an idiot. When the Sox do win, it's despite him and not because of him. You've seen nothing until you've seen Thome ordered to bunt...
