Sure, Ryan, Sure . . .

Ryan Zimmerman broke a bone in his left wrist and needs surgery. His story: he was swinging a bat while working out with friends last weekend and something just cracked.

Hurm.

Look, I know nothing about Ryan Zimmerman, but I do know (a) that he swung a bat several thousand times between February and October without hurting himself; (b) that I've never heard of ballplayers getting together with their buddies in the offseason to swing bats as a means of working out; (c) that I have heard of ballplayers getting together with their buddies in the offseason to hunt, goof off, and horse around; and (d) that it is strongly in Zimmerman's best interests for any offseason injuries to be baseball-related, lest he get in big trouble and have his pay docked.

Other than that do I have any reason to think Zimmerman is lying? No. But in light of Jeff Kent's truck washing and Clint Barmes deer meat, it smells funny, and I bet people in the Nats' front office will be asking him a LOT of questions about how the injury occurred.

He's also said (in various articles) that he's been feeling pain in his wrist for at least a year, so who knows.

That being said... on Saturday he participated in a Home Run derby along with David Wright, Mark Reynolds and Mike Cuddeyer for a charity at a Norfolk High School.
