I'm not sure what's crazier: that someone is willing to pay Eric Gagne $10M to pitch in 2008, or that they have to give up a draft pick to sign him.
Still beats $46M I suppose.

It's reported that Gagne = Type B so no draft pick "is lost". Boston gets a supplemental round selection, I believe.

Since the Brewers were willing to spend $42 million for 4 years of Francisco Cordero, there was room in the budget for one year of Gagne at $10 million, and a much shorter commitment. The alternatives were to let Derrick Turnbow close (not a pretty picture) or trade Ricky Weeks (or someone like him) for a year of Chad Cordero or Joe Nathan. When looked at that way, it starts to make more sense.
