Boston just traded for Paul Byrd. The Red Sox are buying high, I'd say -- he's only given up four earned runs in his last four starts (29 IP), but he's really not that good, obviously -- but it's not like they'll be giving up much for him either.
And Byrd is useful in an innings-eating sort of way. My first impulse was to be surprised that he fell all the way down the waiver list to the Red Sox, but then I realized that there's really only one putative playoff contender in the AL with (a) a worse record; and (b) a greater need for pitching, and that's the Yankees.
So, did New York give Byrd a pass because they don't think he can help, or did they give him a pass because they're giving up on the season?
Who goes down: Buchholz or your boy Zink?
