I recall in the early 80s there was a Sports Illustrated cover with a picture of LaRussa on it. Over his face was superimposed what was then futuristic looking high-tech computer readout stuff, and some line about La Russa being a forward thinking genius of a manager or something.
According to the AP, La Russa would have rather forfeited the game than allowed a pitcher to hit in extra innings.
