Quite the Metamorphosis

The Orioles are going to unveil their slightly new uniforms later today. The big change will be the addition of "Baltimore" to the road jerseys for the first time in 36 years. That's cool, as I think city name should be the standard for road jerseys for all of the teams if it's not already.

But it's not just that. Check out the new bird logo!

That's right: a press conference is being held to announce that a bird has lifted its tail feathers somewhat and leaned forward a bit.

  1. Isn't the postion birds take as they are about to be ...

Nevermind, this is a family blog.

  2. I was going to note that that's what birds look like just before they bomb my freshly-washed car, but thought better of it.

  3. Yeah, I'm not sure the new logo is an improvement. Think of how much money was wasted, er spent, to come up with that.

  4. The old bird says Stringer Bell to me. The new one says Omar. I approve.

  5. oh, but look at the claws ready to strike in the new position... so menacing

  6. The old logo is the position of a bird standing on the ground. The new one is the position when they are up in a tree on a branch. BTW, I am a baseball ornithologist

  7. Why won't the Phillies put "Philadelphia" on their road unis?

The bird looks like he's sitting on a twig, without the twig. The old version, at least he's standing.

This new one is just grasping (at straws?)

  8. How did anonymous beat me to that? Damn it!

  9. The strangest part of this isn't the very slight change...it's that Boog Powell and Jim Palmer were in uniform for the unveiling, right next to current players like Markakis, Guthrie, and so on.

  10. @max, nice reference to "the wire". i think i would have gone with an avon/marlo analogy though as they have more in common.

  11. The new logo also has the all-important trademark indicator. Is it possible that the old bird has been public domain this whole time?

  12. I'm a big hater on teams that don't put the City/State name on their road uniforms. I heartily congratulate the Orioles for making the long overdue switch.

We are now down to four holdouts: the Rays, Cardinals, Phillies and Angels. According to this article the Rays are already working on putting Tampa Bay on their road Unis, so good on them, too. C'mon Phillies, Cardinal and Angel fans, let's end the scourge of homeless teams in our lifetime: Yes We Can!

(and yes, I think the Angels should be required to emblazon "Los Angeles of Anaheim" on their chest, if just to remind everyone what a stupid gimmick their name really is.)

  13. APBA Guy-

To think this is how Angelos spends his money. Any guesses on how low-ball his Texeira offer turns out to be?

  14. So what would the Angels put on their uniforms? The only one whose uniform was big enough to fit "Los Angeles of Anaheim" was Mo Vaughn, and he's long since left the Angels.

  15. mkd-

The Milwaukee Brewers don't have the city name on their road uniforms either.
